Jacob's Homemade Tent

I shared a picture of the tent I made for Jacob for his birthday, now here's a little how-to. Well, sort of. I looked at Rubyellen's tutorial (find it here) and the changes Drea made (find it here) and just sort of went with it.

This tent is set up in a little play area for Jacob, and he LOVES being in it! It's his spot to read books all day, take in small toys, and we cuddle up in there a few times a day. Sometimes I hand him water or a snack and he says "Thank you" then heads into his tent to eat it. It melts my heart every time.

I can't take credit for the tutorial, so I'll just tell you what I did differently from Rubyellen's original post:
1. I added a dowel at each set of legs, by simply drilling holes on each side (measuring 4" up from the bottom) and sliding a dowel through the holes.
2. I didn't add elastic or ties to the fabric. Well, I did add ties to it at first but Jacob ripped one of them off and the others kept sliding. I think if you are going to do the ties, the best way to keep them tight around the wood is to notch out a spot for them on the wood. I didn't feel like dealing with that.
3. I just draped the sheet over the center dowel, wrapped it under the bottom dowels, and used velcro to keep them in place. The velcro makes it easy for me to remove the fabric when it needs to be washed.
4. I didn't measure out the length of the fabric, I just used a sheet and trimmed it widthwise a bit.
5. I liked Drea's idea of adding extra dowels at the bottom. I didn't add a back piece, though I wanted to at first. Jacob kept picking up his tent (it's really light) and wanting to throw it, but he's not doing that anymore. I'll probably not add that extra piece so it remains easy to fold up and put away if I ever need to.

This tent took all of 45 minutes to make and aside from the dowels (which are a couple of bucks a piece), I used items I already had at home. It's a super simple project that kids of any age will enjoy. Best of all, it folds up easily and can be tucked away quickly.

featured in BUST magazine!

I'm excited to share that a recipe of mine has been published in the April issue of BUST Magazine! I reworked my homemade Nutella recipe over and over until I got it just perfect! I have updated the recipe for better (WAY better!) results than the original one I posted. Check it out here, or in the latest issue of Bust, out now! I'm just going to go nerd out about this by myself now. :)

Our Spring Garden

garden 1

Last week we started working on our garden. I would like to one day keep a winter garden, too, but this year wasn't the time for it. I planted some strawberry runners my mother-in-law sent us home with, and I'm hoping they'll really spread out and fruit. We've not had much success at all with strawberries in the past. We picked up some greens to plant, and since it's still pretty cold out, I think they'll do pretty well for a while. I'm also planting snow and sugar snap peas for the first time this year. I don't know why peas intimidate me to grow, but I'll try it! I love snacking on them so much! Oh! Our nursery was having a "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" sale on fruit trees, so we picked up a Honeycrisp apple tree and a combination apple tree. Honeycrisps are my absolute favorite apple, I usually have two a day during apple season. And who knew there is such a thing as a combination apple tree!? It has three different varieties growing on it! We picked up a pear tree, as well, to replace the one we have which is rotted and sick.

I am hoping for a break in the rain soon so I can finish planting my plants! I am so so excited to garden. Every year, it's my favorite thing to look forward to. It is so rewarding to get outside, work hard and sweat, then literally enjoy the fruits of your labor! I'm no expert, but I'm learning a few tricks here and there. In this home, I've gardened pregnant and I've gardened with a tiny babe sitting in a bouncy chair next to me. Now Jacob can run around and help his mama, and eat what we grow!

Oh! We are going to build a green house this year for our summer crops. I can't wait to share that with you all! And I can't wait to have a crapload of tomatoes to eat.

(here are some pictures from our previous gardens, you can see more by clicking this garden link!)
